* Number of teams: 10 (two more than last year, with Kochi Tuskers and Pune Warriors joining the fray this time).
* Format: In the new format, every team will play 14 league matches (seven home and seven away) as in previous seasons but with a slight difference.
* Each team will play five other teams both home and away (10 matches), two teams only at home, and the remaining two teams only away.
* A random draw was applied to arrive upon who plays whom once and twice.
* Play-off games: After 70 league matches, finalists will be decided after three play-off games.
* The first play-off (Qualifier 1) will be between top two teams with the winner making it to the final.
* The teams that finish third and fourth will be involved in a virtual quarterfinal (Eliminator).
* The winner of the Eliminator and the loser of the Qualifier 1 will fight in a match (Qualifier 2) to decide the other finalist.
* Foreign players: Only 10 foreign players are allowed for each squad while a maximum of four can be fielded in a match.
* Super Over: This is used to decide a winner in case a match ends in a tie
