KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS COACH DAV WHATMORE EYEING IPL PLAYOFFS

Kolkata Knight Riders coach Dav Whatmore eyeing IPL playoffs

The coach of Kolkata Knight Riders, Dav Whatmore has said that his aim at the moment is to earn the side a berth in the knockout stages of the ongoing season four of the Indian Premier League.

King Khan’s Knight Riders will be desperate for a win when they face Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in Delhi on Thursday, April 28. The win against Delhi will surely get their IPL campaign back on track.

The Kolkata side would be coming into the game at the back of two back-to-back defeats against Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Royal Challengers Bangalore, but Whatmore was not worried about the lead-up to the match.

“We do not want to read too much into the situation right now,” said the KKR coach while talking to the media reporters ahead of the game against Daredevils. “This is such a format where you win a couple and lose a couple. At the end of it, making it to the top four will matter,” he added further.

Different people have different opinions about the pitch at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Whilst the Delhi skipper, Virender Sehwag, declared that the Kotla wicket was not to his liking, the RCB batsman Virat Kohli termed the track as the best he has ever played on.

However, Whatmore said that the Delhi deck looks good and reckoned it would assist fast bowlers.

The IPL contest between Delhi and Kolkata would in fact be a clash of two India openers - Virender Sehwag, leading the Daredevils and Gautam Gambhir, the Kolkata skipper. The former Australia cricketer, Whatmore is excited about the game and said some "good contest is on cards".

“They (Sehwag and Gambhir) know each other's game very well,” said the Sri Lanka born former Aussie batsman. “They will share the secrets with their respective teams to their advantage. Viru is a very respected player, Gautam is also very good. There is good contest on cards,” he added further.

With six points from three wins in six games, Kolkata Knight Riders stand fifth on the points table, but Whatmore insisted not to look at the points table just yet. He said that all the IPL teams, except for Mumbai Indians, have been inconsistent in the latest edition of the lucrative league.

He further added that at the moment, their aim is to win as many games as possible to earn a berth in the IPL playoffs.

When asked about batting all-rounder, Rajat Bhatia’s poor performances in the tournament so far, the KKR coach said it would be unfair to single someone out.

“I believe it is unfair to single out Rajat because I don't think he has got decent enough opportunities where he could have made a difference. He is as valuable a player as others,” he explained.

Gayle lined up as Nannes replacement

Bangalore: Royal Challengers Bangalore have lined up Chris Gayle as a replacement for the injured Dirk Nannes, who is out of the remainder of the IPL with a side strain. Gayle will have to get a NOC from the West Indies Cricket Board before he can join Bangalore.

The Gayle issue is complicated because all international players require an NOC from their home board before they can play in the IPL, even if, like Gayle, they are not under contract to their Board. As of now, Gayle has informed the WICB that he is not available for the West Indies versus Pakistan series and wanted to honour his IPL contract during the same period.

It is understood however, that until Gayle's request for an NOC, the WICB was under the impression that Gayle was recovering from an injury. The board had Gayle under an injury management and recovery programme in Jamaica for an injury sustained during the World Cup. The fact that Gayle was taking part in a WICB supported recovery programme, until he made the written request is likely to further complicate the issue of whether or not he gets an NOC from the Board.

In January Gayle, who scored 463 at a strike-rate of 141.59 for Kolkata Knight Riders in the previous three IPL seasons, surprisingly went unsold at the player auction. With a base price of $400,000, he found no bidders due to concerns that he would not be available for much of IPL 2011 due to international commitments.

He has since been left out of West Indies' ODI squad (for the first two matches) that will take on Pakistan at home from April 23, with the WICB deciding to focus on grooming youngsters after the quarter-final exit from the World Cup .

Nannes, who was injured during Bangalore's second match of the league, was bought for $650,000 at the auction. IPL rules prevent franchises from signing replacement players at a higher value than the player they are replacing.

Bangalore have made a poor start to the IPL, losing three of their first four matches and are languishing at the bottom of the table.

RCB v DC 2011 IPL 4 11th Match Live Score - Royal Bangalore v Deccan Chargers IPL4 11 the Match Teams

RCB v DC 2011 IPL 4 11th Match Live Score - Royal Bangalore v Deccan Chargers IPL4 11 the Match Teams

Finalist of 2009 IPL, Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalorewill meet again in the 11th match of 2011 Indian Premier League - IPL 4, in the only game of Thursday, 14th April, 2011 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad, in a night game starting from 14.30 GMT, 8.00 PM IST.

Royal Challengers Bangalore after winning their opening match lost to Mumbai at their home, and now they have a good chance to get some points. Dilshan is back in form with a half century and they need solid performance from Kohli and de Villiers in the middle.

Deccan Chargers lost their both the matches and now they have to win to stay in the tournament. Captain Sangakkara, Duminy, Shikhar Dhawan and Daniel Christian have to play good innings to win from now.

Royal Bangalore Playing 11, Team, Squad for IPL4 11th Match:

AB de Villiers, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Virat Kohli, Saurabh Tiwary, Cheteshwar Pujara, Asad Pathan, Mayank Agarwal, Abhimanyu Mithun, Daniel Vettori (cap), Zaheer Khan, Dirk Nannes.

Deccan Chargers Playing 11, Team, Squad for IPL4 11th Match:

Kumar Sangakkara (cap/wk), Jean-Paul Duminy, Shikhar Dhawan, Daniel Christian, Bharat Chipli, Dwaraka Ravi Teja, Ishank Jaggi, Ishant Sharma, Dale Steyn, Amit Mishra , Pragyan Ojha.

Deccan Chargers to take on Royal Challengers

Two games into IPL 4, Kumar Sangakkara must be wondering if, like Adam Gilchrist, a left-handed wicket-keeper batsman, he too has inherited a team that does not behove of its potential on paper.

It is inexplicable but that's the way it has been with Chargers and the skipper will have to get his teammates to pull their weight in the same direction if he intends to arrest the downward spiral.

The heart to win was conspicuous by its absence as first Shane Warne's Rajasthan Royals and then Gautam Gambhir's Kolkata Knight Riders exposed the frailties in Chargers' batting.

A misfiring top-order meant the powerplay was never fully made capital use of and the Chargers openers' ability to sustain their hitting will come under scrutiny in their first night game at home against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday.

That is only half their worry as a wobbly middle apart, gnawing at them would be their poor record at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. They have played 10 home games (7 in IPL 1 in 2008, 2 champions League matches in 2009 and 1 IPL match in 2011) and are yet to win one. Sangakkara's twin failure has on both occasions brought JP Duminy into a situation where he has had to rebuild at frenetic pace - a task fraught with danger.

Daniel Christian has shown that he is no lark with the bat and his ability to biff the ball a fair distance along with DB Ravi Teja has spared Chargers the blushes.

Their spin twins Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra looked to have overcome their initial hesitancy and acquitted themselves well against Knight Riders, while their pacers Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma have not fared badly; it must be said in their favour that they did not get a decent score to defend in the first game and when they did well to restrict KKR, the batsmen made a hash of what could have been a good chase and that which could have instilled self-belief that accrues from combating tough situations.

It was one such situation the Royal Challengers found themselves in the other night, failed to wriggle out and Mumbai Indians ran out comprehensive winners.

But there is no gainsaying the fact that the RCB batting wears a healthy look what with the likes of Tillakaratne Dilshan and AB de Villiers having already logged a half-century each. Add to that the prowess of Virat Kohli and Saurabh Tiwary and damage limitation can be quite a task.

The one major worry for skipper Daniel Vettori concerns Dirk Nannes, who bowled one over against Mumbai Indians before leaving the field with a bad back. Royal Challengers will hope that he is back on park to bolster the attack led by Zaheer Khan.

It's been an interesting tussle between the two southern outfits who have pretty much kept each other company the last three seasons. The first edition saw RCB and DC finish seventh and eighth in the table, the second saw DC and RCB finish winners and runners-up. RCB were third and DC fourth in the third edition. The teams have won three each of the six games played so far and it remains to be seen which way this goes because Chargers will not play away at RCB this season.
