A random draw will take place, which will decide how the teams will be grouped, as well as who plays whom across the groups once and twice.

IPL PLAYOFFS FORMAT

DD vs KTK: Desperate times for Delhi Daredevils

NEW DELHI: If there is one thing in common between the Delhi Daredevils and Kochi Tuskers Kerala it has to be the lack of local flavour in both sides. Virender Sehwag and Shanthakumaran Sreesanth are the only two names with which their respective city fans identify themselves.

The direct effect of this fact is visible in the IPL 4 games in Delhi and Kochi. Crowds have always been the 12th man of IPL franchises at home - ask Rajasthan Royals, who have made the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur their fortress.

That's sadly not the case in Ferozeshah Kotla anymore, as was visible on Thursday night. The fans vociferously supported Gautam Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders.

Kochi is feeling the financial pinch of the phenomenon with people giving the IPL the cold-shoulder back home. Losing games at home consistently isn't helping the two sides either.

Delhi have won just one out of the five games at the Kotla while Kochi lost the last couple of games - the latest being a 38-run defeat at the hands of Daredevils on Sunday.

Both sides are locked on six points from eight games going into Monday's match at the Kotla and with the IPL 4 so closely packed, a win for either side will vault them back into contention.

Daredevils have failed to string together a series of wins in this tournament so far, their victories almost invariably supplemented by a couple of losses.

The 22-yard strip has been the focus of attention at the Kotla this year. After the run-riot on the 'green' track against Kings XI Punjab, the Daredevils' runs have rapidly dried up.

The 40 degree Delhi heat and three matches in a week have taken a toll on the surface which has gone markedly slower.

The Delhi & Districts Cricket Association has now decided to employ the other green tracks at the other end of the centre wickets.

"This new track will be exactly like the other side wickets. It has similar amount of grass and will have pace and movement for the seam bowlers," DDCA grounds and pitches committee chairman Venkat Sundaram told TOI on Sunday.

Refusing to take the blame for the track getting slow, Sundaram said, "We didn't shave any grass from the track. There was normal wear-and-tear on the wicket due to the Delhi heat."

The Daredevils are expected to return to their all-seam attack at Kotla after employing left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe on the extremely low-and-slow Kochi track.

The Tuskers' weakness against quality seam bowling - exposed so brutally by Ishant Sharma and Dale Steyn - will be on Morne Morkel & Co.'s mind as well.

But before the bowlers take stage, skipper Sehwag and opener David Warner will once again be expected to post the bulk of the runs. Nothing less than a win will suffice for the two sides, both looking to stay away from the bottom of the points table.

KEY CLASHES

MUTTIAH MURALITHARAN VS DELHI MIDDLE-ORDER

The Daredevils middle-order has been far from consistent so far this season with the exception of Venugopal Rao. They will face their biggest test in tackling the Sri Lankan offie, who will get purchase even from the green Kotla track.

MORNE MORKEL VS BRENDON McCULLUM

The extra bounce of the South African seamer can ruffle most batsmen but McCullum is not one to take a backward step. The Kiwi opener will flay anything slightly off-line and the short square boundary on one side of the ground will surely be a temptation.

VIRENDER SEHWAG VS SREESANTH

The Delhi skipper's willow has been key to Daredevils' form this season. The Devils will once again bank on Sehwag to down Kochi for the second time in two days. The opener will have to see out on-song Sreesanth, who is slow finding his rhythm. The Kochi seamer will find the helpful Kotla track to his liking.

BCCI mulls on shifting IPL playoffs after tiff with Mumbai police

The tough stand taken by the Mumbai police preventing even Cricket Board officials from entering their own premises inside the Wankhede Stadium during IPL match days if they are without police passes has upset the BCCI which is threatening to shift next month's two playoff ties from the venue to Bangalore.

"The Board officials are upset with the Mumbai police for insisting that they have to carry police accreditations to enter their own offices (at Cricket Centre inside the Wankhede Stadium).

"The Mumbai Cricket Association has been given three days' time to sort out this issue with the police or the two semifinal matches (on May 24 and 25) would be shifted to Bangalore," according to informed sources.

We have laid a nice platform to reach last four: Bollinger

Man of the Match Doug Bollinger hailed Chennai Super Kings' comprehensive victory over Pune Warriors, saying the win has laid a good platform for the defending champions to reach the playoffs.

"It's a couple of good wins. We jut want to get consistency and get really good starts. We have nine games (actually only 7) which is a really good platform to get into top four and then top two," said the Australian pacer who grabbed three for 21, including two wickets in successive balls, at the DY Patil stadium on Wednesday.

IPL preview: Chennai Super Kings vs Deccan Chargers

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings will aim to keep their unbeaten home run intact as they host Deccan Chargers at the MA Chidambaram stadium on Sunday.

A win in this match will give MS Dhoni and Co their fourth successive win at home while for Deccan it gives them an opportunity to go level on points.

Chennai are on eight points with seven games while the Deccan, winners of the 2009 edition, have six from as many games. And now both teams would be desperate to pick up points that will take them closer to the playoffs — top four spot.

Chennai, who have a good batting attack, will be wary of Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma, who are in red hot form at the moment.

The opening pair of Murali Vijay and Mike Hussey has been the main reason for their success as more often than not they have laid the foundation for Chennai's victory.

Subramaniam Badrinath, Suresh Raina and skipper Dhoni provide enough stability in the middle order.

Their bowling has also been on the spot. With the return of Aussie fast bowler Doug Bollinger, backed by off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Time Southee, Chennai has the capability to keep a check on the strongest batting line-up.

Their fielding too has gone up a few notches, that gives them a well-rounded and settled appearance.

Deccan, on the other hand, will be banking on skipper Kumar Sangakkara, who is the only consistent performer for the visitors, to come up with another inspirational performance.

In the last match against Kochi Tuskers, they managed to defend a modest total of 130 thanks to Sharma, who returned with figures of 5 for 12 in three overs.

Playing at home and their recent performance might give Chennai an edge over Deccan. However, if the vistors manage to come up with a performance as similar to the one against Kochi then there will be no stopping Deccan.

Teams: (from):
Chennai: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (c), Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina, S Badrinath, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shadab Jakati, Michael Hussey, Albie Morkel, Ben Hilfenhaus, Doug Bollinger, G Bailey, Tim Southee, F du Plessis, Suraj Randiv, Nuwan Kulasekara, Joginder Sharma, Yo Mahesh, A Mukund, Wriddhiman Saha, Scott Styris, Sudeep Tyagi, K Vasudevadas, G Vignesh.

Deccan: Kumar Sangakkara (c), Ashish Reddy, Anand Rajan, Ankit Sharma, Akash Bhandari, Bharat Chipli, Daniel Christian, Kedar Devdhar, Shikhar Dhawan, Jean Paul Duminy, Manpreet Gony, Harmeet Singh, Ishank Jaggi, Michael Lumb, Chris Lynn, Ishan Malhotra, Amit Mishra, Pragyan Ojha, Ravi Teja, Jaydev Shah, Ishant Sharma, Sunny Sohal, Dale Steyn, Rusty Theron, Cameron White, Arjun Yadav.

IPL preview: Rajasthan Royals vs Pune Warriors India

Pune Warriors India will hope to break the five match losing streak and get their IPL campaign back on track as they take on a rejuvenated Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.

With just four points in their kitty from seven outings, Pune — the most expensive team in the IPL —face a must win situation to keep their chances afloat of making it to the playoffs.

After the two initial games, which they won convincingly, Pune's confidence at the moment will be at the lowest ebb.

Except skipper Yuvraj Singh and Jesse Ryder, none of their batsmen have proved their worth. Robin Uthappa has managed to get good starts but failed to carry on and play a big innings.

Injury to South African batsman Graeme Smith has left a void in the batting order which players like Mithun Manhas and Nathan McCullum have failed to fill.

The bowling department looks pretty decent and has been right on to the mark throughout the tournament. In Alphonso Thomas and Jerome Taylor Pune have a lethal pace attack along with talented Rahul Sharma and veteran Murali Kartik, who are quite good with the old ball.

Rajasthan, on the other hand, are looking to keep the winning momentum intact and after their seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in the last match the confidence will be at its peak.

They are the perfect example of a team that doesn't boast big names but have the potential to take down any big on their day.

In legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne they have the perfect leader, who instills confidence in his youth brigade.
Johan Botha, Shane Watson and Ross Taylor are other big names, who have performed consistently for Rahasthan.

The uncapped players like Siddharth Trivedi, Ashok Menaria and Amit Singh have also chipped in with useful contribution from time to time to help Royals bounce back after three consecutive losses away from home.

Teams: (from)
Rajasthan: Shane Warne (C), Swapnil Asnodkar, Stuart Binny, Johan Botha, Deepak Chahar, Ankeet Chavan, Aakash Chopra, Aditya Dole, Nayan Doshi, Rahul Dravid, Samad Fallah, Faiz Fazal, Ashok Menaria, Sumit Narwal, Jacob Oram, Pankaj Singh, Amit Paunikar, Ajinkya Rahane, Abhishek Raut, Dinesh Salunkhe, Pinal Shah, Amit Singh, Shaun Tait, Ross Taylor, Siddharth Trivedi, Shane Watson and Dishant Harendra Yagnik.
